Shepherd’s Song

Collage by Hector Rios – 2015

We hurry and herd,
bump into one another,
complain of the smell,
cannot get our head
above the crowd…

Where are we going?

Is it beyond want?
Is it beyond fear?
Are the pastures littered with busy
leftovers of bolstered agendas?
Is staleness a comfortable zone of existence?
Can we recognize fresh and green anymore?

Why are we going?

The sky is widest where the trees are cleared,
but one can appreciate the openness of strength and clarity
beneath the shade of any tree, when it is Home!
Imagined vistas of beauty are only one blink of truth away
Can we hear as well as we claim to see?

Who is leading?

The beyond is present here and now
Stalwart stasis yields to the beacon
A light, a footstep, from behind or ahead
A gentle nudge or a mighty push
Honest desire to trust the staff

To have heard instead of herded
To follow is to be found!
